FRENCH FAR-RIGHT LE PEN REELECTED AS PRESIDENT OF NATIONAL RALLY PARTY

Sun 04 July 2021:

The spokesman for the French far-right National Rally Party Jordan Bardella said on Sunday that Marine Le Pen has been reelected as the party leader.

“Congratulations to Marine Le Pen, reelected by the members as the President of the National Rally with over 98% during our Congress in Perpignan! United, our movement is in working order for the next deadlines, capitals which are in sight,” Bardella Tweeted.

Reelected for her fourth mandate as the party leader, Le Pen is now in need for new incentives for her 2022 presidential bid after her National Rally failed to win any votes during the second round of France’s regional elections on June 27.

Le Pen ran for the French president in the 2017 election against incumbent Emmanuel Macron.

Far-right party suffers blow in French regional elections

Last week Marine Le Pen’s far-right party has suffered a serious electoral blow when it failed to win a regional election in its stronghold in the south of France.

Last week’s result was a final bitter disappointment for the  Rassemblement National (National Rally) RN, which had been predicted to do well in at least five regions in the first-round vote last Sunday. In the end, the RN came first only in PACA, and then only by a narrow margin.

Le Pen accused her rivals of forming “unnatural alliances” to block her and her party from power.

“[They] did all they could to keep us out and prevent us from showing the French our capacity to lead a regional administration,” she told supporters.
