Fri 04 February 2022:

On Friday, Germany recorded almost 250,000 new coronavirus cases, the highest single-day increase since the pandemic began.

In the last 24 hours, the country’s disease control organization, the Robert Koch Institute (RKI), has documented 248,838 new COVID-19 infections and 170 coronavirus-related deaths.

The country has seen a record number of daily cases for the second day in a row, with health officials reporting 236,120 illnesses on Thursday.

According to the RKI, the highly infectious omicron variety is the main cause of the outbreak, accounting for approximately 98 percent of new cases.

In a recent research, the institute’s scientists predicted that daily cases could reach over 300,000 in the next days, with a peak in mid-to-late February.

Despite the increase in new cases, hospital admissions for COVID-19 remained low, with an average of five hospitalizations per 100,000 residents reported by authorities.

Intensive care units were treating 2,262 COVID-19 patients as of Thursday, with roughly 3,000 beds available.

While the majority of omicron cases have been mild so far, public health officials are warning that the variant is swiftly spreading and might overwhelm the healthcare system if instances continue to rise drastically.

Approximately 74 percent of the population has been fully vaccinated against the coronavirus, and nearly 54 percent of those who have received booster shots have received them.

Germany is one of the countries in Western Europe hardest impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic, with one of the biggest caseloads in the region, trailing only France, the United Kingdom, and Italy.

Since the beginning of the pandemic, the 83 million-strong country has reported more than 10.6 million infections and approximately 118,500 deaths.
