Tue 23 November 2021:

GoDaddy Inc claimed that up to 1.2 million active and inactive Managed WordPress customers’ email addresses and customer numbers were exposed in a huge data breach.

In a statement posted Monday evening, GoDaddy Inc, an internet domain registrar and web hosting firm, said that on November 17, 2021, the company found illegal third-party access to the Managed WordPress hosting environment. It went on to state that the data had been exposed as a result of a phishing assault.

While the initial investigation found that access was achieved using a compromised password during the beginning of September 6, 2021, the statement continues.

GoDaddy claimed that while the original WordPress Admin password that was set at the time of provisioning was exposed, in case the same credentials were still in use, the company had reset those passwords.

“For active customers, sFTP and database usernames and passwords were exposed. We reset both passwords. For a subset of active customers, the SSL private key was exposed. We are in the process of issuing and installing new certificates for those customers,” said the domain registrar giant.

While the company’s investigation is ongoing, all impacted customers will be contacted directly with detailed details, according to the statement.

“Our investigation is ongoing and we are contacting all impacted customers directly with specific details,” says Demetrius Comes, chief information security officer of GoDaddy. “We will learn from this incident and are already taking steps to strengthen our provisioning system with additional layers of protection.”

According to The Associated Press, Robinhood claimed a security breach a few weeks ago, in which hackers gained access to personal information for a total of 7 million Robinhood clients and demanded a ransom payment.

A T-Mobile data hack reportedly affected 100 million wireless customers in August.
