Tue 23 March 2021:

Ten people, including a police officer who was the first to respond to the scene, were killed in the Monday shooting at the King Soopers supermarket in Boulder, Colorado, local police said.

The incident began at about 14:30 local time (20:30 GMT) on Monday when the suspect entered the supermarket and began firing.

Video taken by an eyewitness to the Boulder, Colorado, supermarket shooting appears to show people lying on the ground inside and outside the store, and purported gunshots are heard.

“We now have ten fatalities at the scene, including one of our Boulder PD officers by the name of Eric Talley, who has been on the Boulder Police Department since 2010,” Boulder Police Chief Maris Herold told reporters on Monday night.

According to police, the investigation will take no less than five days to complete.

“I can share with the public today…

that there is no ongoing public threat. We do have a person of interest in custody,” Yamaguchi said as shown on CBS news television channel.

Aerial footage later showed a man, who appeared only to be wearing shorts, being taken away in handcuffs.

Maris named the officer killed as Eric Talley, a 51-year-old who had been with the Boulder police department since 2010.

Maris did not provide further details about the shooting, but said that the investigation was “very complex” and would take “no less that five days to complete”.

The names of the other victims will not be released until relatives have been informed.

Boulder, Colorado, Mayor Sam Weaver thanked police officers and first responders at the scene of an active shooter, saying “words can do no justice to the tragedy that has unfolded this afternoon.”

“Our community will soon grieve our losses, and begin our healing. Our brave police officers and first responders have the gratitude of our entire city,” Weaver said in a tweet on Monday.

Colorado Gov. Jared Polis said earlier that he is “closely watching” as events unfold.

Boulder police say the scene is still “very active,” but we do not know a lot of information about what happened – including the conditions of people inside the store.

US President Joe Biden has been informed of the Boulder, Colorado supermarket shooting that reportedly left several people dead, White House spokesperson Jen Psaki said.

“The President has been briefed on the shooting in Colorado and he will be kept up to date by his team as there are additional developments,” Psaki wrote on Twitter on Monday.

Last month, Biden said he would be recommending tougher legislation to ensure background checks on anyone wishing to purchase a firearm.
