◼️ US hits SA with 12.5% tariffs: The Trump administration on Friday imposed new tariffs of 10% and 12.5% on goods from 60 trading partners, including the European Union (EU) and China, over allegations of lax enforcement of forced labour bans, just as a temporary 10% global tariff expired, Reuters reported. South Africa is among the countries hit with 12.5%, although certain products are exempted. Effectively, it increases tariffs from the current global tariff of 10% to 12.5%.

◼️ D-day for Ramaphosa in Phala Phala interdict bid: President Cyril Ramaphosa will know within hours whether Parliament’s impeachment committee must down tools. The Western Cape High Court hands down judgment at 10am on Friday in his urgent application to interdict the section 89 committee probing the Phala Phala scandal. Advocate Wim Trengove, for the president, told the court his client faced irreversible injustice if subjected to what he called a humiliating public trial based on a report still under legal scrutiny.

◼️ A single accounting error will cost South Africa R9.6 billion and 45,000 jobs: The National Energy Regulator of South Africa’s (NERSA) approval of a R54 billion Eskom tariff adjustment will destroy 45,394 jobs and make South Africans R9.6 billion poorer over the next two years. This was revealed in a recently released report by NERSA analysing the potential economic impact of the tariff adjustment approval.

◼️ Authorities coming after online purchases and couriers: However, international online retailers have increasingly become associated with scams and fraudulent transactions in South Africa. South African customers order items online through international e-commerce sites, and are sometimes left with a product that is not what was advertised. These online stores do not follow the same advertising and product laws as South African companies, making it difficult for citizens to resolve these issues.

◼️ Month-old rhino calf rescued after poachers kill mother: The rhino is believed to have been killed between yesterday (July 22) and today (July 23). She was shot and dehorned. The calf disappeared after the attack, prompting a farm-wide search. Farm owner Deon Cornelius confirmed that the calf had been located and said arrangements were being made for it to be airlifted to a rehabilitation facility, believed to be in Bela-Bela.
