◼️ Medicine prices rise 2.88% as industry warns of shortages: SA’s pharmaceutical industry says rising input costs are putting pressure on medicine supply, with shortages emerging as manufacturers struggle to absorb higher costs. Pharmisa chairperson Stavros Nicolaou said the January increase was too low to absorb rising costs faced by manufacturers. He said the situation deteriorated further from March because of the Gulf oil crisis and disruption around the Strait of Hormuz, with some input costs rising 30% to 40%.

◼️ Trump administration to welcome up to 17,500 more White South Africans: Last week, the U.S. imposed new sanctions on South African officials who it said were responsible for discriminating against Afrikaners. The Afrikaner resettlement effort is projected to cost the U.S. government $500 million, the notice to Congress said. While the second Trump administration has effectively shut down the U.S. refugee resettlement program for most people fleeing persecution and violence around the world, it has made an exemption for Afrikaners, resettling thousands of them over the past year and a half.

◼️ ‘Inaccurate’ women’s crime data: The Portfolio Committee on Police is probing allegations that crime statistics involving women could be inaccurate and that police stations with high incidences of crime have remained unchanged. Cameron said adding up the quarterly figures did not produce the annual totals. He said some offences had been counted more than once, so that the women-and-children subset could exceed the total number of victims. He said there were also inconsistencies in recording victims’ ages and sexes and in linking victims to the correct charges.

◼️ Constitutional Court warning for private schools in SA: Private schools in South Africa cannot assume that their children can never be excluded because of unpaid school fees. This is because the legal position differs significantly between public and independent schools, with private schools operating under contractual agreements with parents. However, private schools also cannot simply terminate a learner’s enrolment without due consideration of constitutional rights.

◼️ New rules for traffic police in SA – including when they can arrest you: Traffic wardens are responsible as first responders to secure and protect incident and accident scenes, offering roadside assistance to the public, and even enforcing regulations regarding stray, injured, or dead animals on public roads. The Gazette also outlined pedestrian enforcement responsibilities, including monitoring pedestrian adherence to road safety rules and performing vehicle area patrols. During an arrest, wardens can demand the full names and residential address of any person they have the power to arrest, reasonably suspect of committing or attempting to commit an offence.
