◼️ ‘No place like home’: Cabinet says Afrikaners who left South Africa for the United States (US) after claiming there was genocide remain welcome to return and will not face persecution. Ntshavheni’s announcement comes after reports emerged that hundreds of Afrikaners hoping to relocate to the US, under President Donald Trump’s refugee programme for minority groups, were informed that their visa applications were rejected after falsely claiming genocide.

◼️ WATCH | Illegal firearms fuel 99% of SA gun murders: Executive Director of Gun Free SA, Dr Stanley Maphosa, said the statistic reflected concerns his organisation has raised for over 30 years, pointing to a lack of political will to address the crisis. He said the country lost an average of 30 people to gun violence every day. “It confirms what Gun Free South Africa has been saying for over 30 years, that we have a gun violence crisis in this country. And this gun violence crisis in this country, there are very few people that have got the appetite to solve it.”

◼️ The off-grid power plant in a small South African village: Located in the Raymond Mhlaba Local Municipality, the village has only had electricity for the last six years. Not a single kilowatt-hour of its energy comes from Eskom. Being sparsely populated and in a mountainous region far away from large developments made it highly unlikely that Eskom would consider connecting the village to its transmission grid.

◼️ R50,000 fine or jail time for these WhatsApp messages: The messages included baseless allegations regarding their involvement in corruption, adultery, and sexual innuendos, along with discriminatory remarks about Indians. The Equality Court ruled that these comments constituted hate speech, harassment, and unfair discrimination. Tsoleli was ordered to pay R50,000 in compensation to Lockman-Naidoo within 30 days.

◼️ An ‘evil’ activity: Online gambling has become a problem for many people in South Africa, especially among poor households, where they see it as a way to make extra money. Old Mutual’s 2026 Saving and Investment Monitor report revealed the extent of the problems online gambling causes. It showed that 53% of working South Africans gamble. Sports betting, casino games, and the Lotto are the most popular forms of gambling.
