Here’s what’s happening in South Africa today:👇🏼

◼️ Zuma’s MK Party succession plans and Duduzane in the spotlight: Her comments come as Zuma’s hospitalisation prompts renewed questions about the future of the uMkhonto weSizwe (MK) Party and whether it has a succession plan should its founder leave the political stage, The Star reported. Speaking about Zuma’s condition on Sunday, Ntshavheni said he was under the care of the Surgeon General, who had been assigned by President Cyril Ramaphosa to oversee the process.

◼️ South Africans charged R31 billion: South Africans are paying R31 billion in banking fees each year simply to deposit and withdraw their own cash. A case study included in the report from Soweto highlighted the mistrust some consumers have about leaving money in a bank account. One resident explained why they preferred to withdraw cash rather than leave it in the banking system. “Get [the money] out of the bank and into my hands. The bank will cut my money (for example, through transaction fees), or a debit order will be processed, and my money is gone. It’s safer in my pockets or [a] secret hiding place,” the resident said.

◼️OR Tambo land is ready for take-off: Phase one — the smallest slice of the plan — was costed at R4.5 billion. It would comprise three six-storey office buildings totalling 30 000m, plus around 2 000 parking bays. The pandemic halted air travel. Passenger numbers collapsed, ACSA’s revenue went with them and a plan built on the assumption that more and more people would keep flying became a luxury nobody could afford. The hotel, conference centre and most of the retail space were shelved. The project was scrapped, except phase one, which survived.

◼️Driving licences could stop working as ID: The change would prevent people from using driving licences, learner’s licences, or TRNs as secondary proof of identity when entering estates or offices, forcing them to carry official IDs instead. In a statement, the department said it had assisted the Department of Home Affairs in a major 2023 investigation, which revealed the widespread abuse of these documents.

◼️WhatsApp fraud warning for South Africans: For example, “Hi Mom, my phone broke. This is my new number, please save it.” The criminal then asks for money, often claiming that their banking app is not working on the new phone or that there is an urgent expense to pay. The request is designed to create a sense of urgency before the recipient has time to question it. “A criminal has no need to hack anything when a parent will open the banking app for them,” explained Integrity360 Group CTO Richard Ford.
