◼️ Oprah Winfrey to close her school for girls in SA: At the end of the 2027 academic year, the expansive boarding school campus near Johannesburg is to be handed over to local education authorities as per the original agreement, her statement says. Since opening its doors, the elite school – built at a cost of $40m (£20m) and located in the village of Henley-on-Klip south of Johannesburg – has not been without scandal, sparking rumours about the reason for its closure.

◼️ Major cocaine bust: Gauteng police have seized 95 kilograms of cocaine with an estimated street value of R28 million after intercepting a cargo shipment that arrived from Brazil at OR Tambo International Airport. She added that investigations are continuing to identify those responsible for the attempted smuggling operation and to trace the intended recipients of the drugs.

◼️ Malema ‘not scared’ of Madlanga commission: “If it means prison let it be, arrest me, but you are not going to address me by belittling me. I do not care if you are a judge or a magistrate or a commissioner, no one speaks to me like I am a boy… I am not scared of anything, especially where I think I have not done nothing wrong. Do not think there is some scaremongering about Madlanga about me,” Malema said.

◼️ Ramaphosa approves plan to break Eskom’s monopoly: The statement said this would set the stage for restructuring South Africa’s electricity sector to create competition, unlock investment, and reduce electricity prices. Additionally, the Presidency said it would ensure energy security for sustained economic growth and job creation. There has been a deep policy and ideological rift regarding how the unbundling of Eskom should proceed as part of a push to liberalise South Africa’s electricity sector.

◼️39% of South Africans expect to miss at least one bill repayment: High inflation is reshaping how households spend, borrow and save, driving more cautious financial behaviour and softer optimism. More than half of consumers (53%) said they had cut back on discretionary spending such as dining out, travel, and entertainment over the past three months. A further 28% cancelled subscriptions or memberships, while 24% cancelled or reduced digital services such as wireless, cable TV, or internet.
