Here’s what’s happening in South Africa today: 👇🏼

◼️ Will SA receive reparations from UK and Netherlands for colonialism? The question comes as momentum builds across the continent after the African Union’s (AU) declaration of a “decade for reparations”. At an AU assembly session in Ethiopia in February 2026, African leaders adopted a landmark resolution recognising slavery and colonialism as “crimes against humanity”, strengthening calls for historical justice and reparations.

◼️ Eight-year driving licences: “Once driver’s licences are made valid for eight years, there will be a period of reduced demand during which the equipment and systems for printing and issuing driver’s licences can be upgraded.” The country’s sole licence card printer broke down again in early February 2025 and did not resume operations until May, creating a backlog of over 700,000 cards.

◼️ SA’s water mafia going after R2.3 billion target: “Some members noted allegations of tampering with water systems to create demand for tankers. These allegations require focused attention,” the committee said. President Cyril Ramaphosa also noted this growing problem in 2025, having told the National Water and Sanitation Indaba that criminal syndicates have infiltrated parts of the water supply in South Africa.

◼️ Truth about gambling in SA: According to the South African Reserve Bank (SARB), reports that South Africans spend R1.5 trillion on gambling are misleading. In 2024, games of chance accounted for 1.3% of total household spending, up from 1.1% in 2015. The share of GGR in relation to total household spending also rose from 0.9% to 1.6%.

◼️ SAPS prepares for the long-awaited rollout of body-worn cameras: This emerged when Acting Police Minister Firoz Cachalia indicated that the procurement of the cameras is at a contracting stage, which is estimated to cost R14 million and is expected to commence in the new financial year beginning in April. In November 2024, suspended Police Minister Senzo Mchunu said, “The estimated cost for each body-worn camera is approximately R28,818. It is important to note that while we are committed to this initiative, the overall budget for the procurement of body-worn cameras will be contingent upon the availability of funding.”
