Here’s what’s happening in South Africa today: 👇🏼
◼️ Ramaphosa to learn fate of Phala Phala interdict bid within a week: Ramaphosa wants the inquiry stopped from commencing its work until the same court rules on his bid to set aside the report behind it. The report found he has a case to answer over the theft of at least $580,000 from his Phala Phala farm in Limpopo. The matter was heard by a full bench of judges André le Grange, Matthew Francis and Diane Davis.

◼️ Here’s how much of its R1bn crimefighting war chest the police ministry has spent: While hundreds of millions have gone unspent nationally, provincial legislatures argue that not enough is being invested into community-based interventions. The police ministry explained that R798.8 million had been allocated for operational deployments and organised crime interventions, with R246 million available for equipment, technology, administrative costs and broader national stabilisation efforts.

◼️ Children of immigrants forced to leave SA schools: Nemhara is one of hundreds, possibly thousands, of learners whose schooling has been disrupted by the recent wave of anti-immigrant action. More than 50,000 immigrants are estimated to have left in recent weeks. Gift of the Givers says it has assisted about 32,000 people at the temporary repatriation centre in Musina, serving more than 115,000 hot meals. The organisation’s community liaison officer, Cliffort Mabe, said they have provided three hot meals a day, water, baby formula, nappies, hygiene packs and blankets.

◼️ New rules for foreigners buying property in SA: “This is not just a Cape Town story, or a luxury estate story – it’s a value story,” said Stevens. “Global buyers are comparing South Africa with other prime destinations and realising they can get space, setting, lifestyle and long-term benefits here at prices that are hard to match elsewhere.” Amid the rise of foreign home purchases, the SARB has updated its harmonised Balance of Payments (BoP) codes. The BoP reporting system is thus intended to provide comprehensive reporting of all transaction data, regardless of the amount.
