◼️ SA-Iran naval drill: Minister of Defence and Military Veterans, Angie Motshekga, said that the Presidency is investigating South Africa’s naval exercise with China and Iran. She revealed this in response to Parliamentary questions about the debacle from Member of the National Assembly, Athol Trollip. The drills highlighted growing security cooperation and non-Western alignment within the Global South.

◼️ Good news about US tariffs on SA: South Africa’s agricultural sector has breathed a collective sigh of relief, as new tariffs being levied against exports by the United States have been deemed a substantial improvement over those implemented previously. On 24 July 2026, the US implemented new Section 301 tariffs on goods imported from 60 countries, including South Africa.

◼️ Coughing up cash: Anecdotal evidence indicates that this year has been an especially severe one for flu, with people saying they had stayed in bed for at least a week in some cases. A Johannesburg GP — who spoke on condition of anonymity — says the bug currently doing the rounds is “very bad” and either influenza A or swine flu, potentially being a mutation of both in conjunction with Covid-19. MedPark Hospital explains that influenza A is characterised by high fever, body aches and a cough, and is the only type known to cause global pandemics.
