◼️ Seventy years after South Africa’s women’s march, the struggle is not over: Nowhere is that tension more visible than in South Africa’s continuing crisis of gender-based violence. South African police recorded 9,782 reported rapes between January and March 2026, along with 12,590 sexual offences. That amounts to roughly 108 reported rapes every day. Almost half of those reported rapes, 4,620, or 47.2 percent, took place at the home of the victim or the perpetrator, according to police statistics.

◼️ From bad to worse for unemployment in: Between April and June 2026, there was an increase of 345,000 in the number of unemployed persons to 8.5 million, while there was a decrease of 16,000 in the number of employed persons to 16.7 million. This resulted in an increase of 329,000 in the labour force during the same period.

◼️ President Ramaphosa meets Perez family following government intervention: The President met with the Perez family on Monday and expressed his condolences following the return of the remains of Perez, who was born and raised in South Africa. Perez was taken hostage and killed on 7 October 2023. The meeting follows the South African Government’s efforts to facilitate the release of his remains and assist the family during the difficult period.

◼️ Age verification systems for YouTube and TikTok: The Department of Communications planned to impose obligations on online video platforms such as YouTube and TikTok to implement age-verification systems in South Africa. This was in the hopes of age-gating content that may be distressing or harmful to children, alongside implementing other new online safety regulations.
