Here’s what’s happening in South Africa today:

◼️ MK Party members stuck in Russia-Ukraine war: Seventeen South African men are fighting for their lives on the frontlines of the war in Ukraine after they were sent to Russia by Jacob Zuma’s MK Party for what they believed was training to become party bodyguards. After complaints about their conditions to party leadership – including to Zuma’s daughter, Duduzile Zuma-Sambudla – yielded no results, they approached President Cyril Ramaphosa.

◼️ New business rules slammed: Plans to overhaul business licensing have faced backlash from the National Employers’ Association of SA (NEASA), which represents around 7,000 businesses. Neasa claims the changes are “BEE in disguise” and objects to proposals that allow local councils to create bylaws for preferential licensing of small businesses owned by disadvantaged groups. Neasa warned that the draft Business Licensing Bill could devastate jobs if implemented as is.
