âźď¸ ICJ sets new deadlines for SA-Israel genocide in Gaza case: âWhether or not Israelâs war on Gaza is authorised by, or has complied with, the international law regarding selfâdefence, as claimed by Israelâs counsel, South Africaâs response is a simple one: selfâdefence is not a defence to genocide, there is none,â the Presidency said. âThe ICJ has already issued three provisional measures Orders at South Africaâs request, determining that Palestinians in Gaza face a âreal and imminent risk of irreparable prejudice.â

âźď¸ John Steenhuisenâs missing R500 million investigation: Members of Parliament expressed concern about its revenue losses, audit qualifications, and ongoing vacancies in key executive posts. In August 2024, shortly after Steenhuisen became minister, he said he was very concerned about the project, which had been given R500 million to revamp the facility. âA large part of the R500 million went missing and is unaccounted for,â he said. He added that a forensic audit would help reveal where the money went.

âźď¸ SAâs middle class is in serious trouble: Total open loans grew by 875,000, or 1.6%, in the quarter, to 56 million loans, while outstanding balances grew by R41 billion, or 1.4%, to R2.7 trillion. Over-indebtedness also increased, with 41% of credit-active South Africans in default, which involved three or more months in arrears, on one or more loans. The number of defaulters grew by close to 400,000 people, and the number of loans in arrears grew by more than 1 million â the largest proportion of loans in arrears since 2024 Q3.

âźď¸ President Ramaphosa to act on âillegal immigrationâ: As anti-foreigner protests have spread across the country in recent days, with flare-ups in Gauteng, KwaZulu-Natal and Western Cape, President Cyril Ramaphosa has pledged a tougher government response to migration issues while cautioning against xenophobia and vigilantism. The Presidentâs comments come as surveys show that anti-foreigner sentiment continues to grow. At the same time, groups such as March and March continue to gain traction and pressure the government to take a stronger stance on immigration.

âźď¸ Mandatory digital system for foreign vehicles: As of 1 June 2026, all foreign-registered vehicles must be declared on the SARS system prior to entering or leaving South Africa. âFrom today, 1 June 2026, all travellers crossing South Africaâs borders must submit an online customs declaration and declare any foreign-registered vehicles they bring into the country,â SARS said.
