◼️ D-Day for President: Ramaphosa is asking for a temporary halt while he reviews the Section 89 Independent Panel’s report, which determined that he has a case to answer related to the Phala Phala theft. This case stems from a 2020 incident where foreign currency was stolen from inside a sofa at Ramaphosa’s game farm. The incident led to allegations that he concealed the crime and possibly violated anti-corruption and foreign exchange laws.

◼️ ‘Jail Tembisa tender kingpins, not just seize their Lamborghinis’: Ahmed Kathrada Foundation warned that stripping syndicates of Lamborghinis and mansions is no substitute for prison cells when billions looted from Tembisa Hospital left infants and patients without care. Balton said the entire criminal enterprise was exposed through the bravery of Babita Deokaran, who flagged R850 million in suspicious tenders before she was assassinated.

◼️ 722 police officers are paid R3.6 billion a year: “In total, SAPS has 722 brigadiers and generals. Below that, we have a whole lot of colonels and so on down to ordinary officers,” Chairperson of Parliament’s Portfolio Committee on Police Ian Cameron said. “The long and the short of it is that we spend, on those senior officers alone, R3.6 billion a year to pay them and maintain them. The question we need to ask is, ‘What are we getting in return?’”

◼️ SA’s anti-migrant unrest led over 160,000 to flee: The largest numbers to leave were from Zimbabwe and Malawi but hundreds more were from countries including Ghana, Kenya, Lesotho, Mozambique, Nigeria and Uganda. Vigilante groups claim migrants drive up crime and take jobs from locals, fuelling tensions in townships grappling with poverty, unemployment and weak policing. Demonstrations, initially low-key in the main, began last year when undocumented foreign nationals were blocked from accessing clinics and hospitals.

◼️ Taxi shutdown warning for SA next week: It said the strike was in response to failures at the Gauteng Department of Roads and Transport, as many operators have been unable to renew their operating licences or apply for new ones. The taxi council said this has resulted in backlogs in the renewal process, which have not been addressed by the provincial department. Operating licences are mandatory for taxi drivers, who can face steep fines or have their vehicles impounded if they fail to produce one.
