One suspect shot and held; two brothers questioned; LSR College suspends classes

Hundreds of students took to the streets in Delhi on Wednesday to demand stronger protection for women after a 17-year-old said three men posing as police officers gang-raped her at a park in the capital this week.

Police shot and detained one suspect on Tuesday and were questioning two others — brothers — senior police officer Vijay Kumar told reporters after the teenager reported the assault.

Most of the demonstrators were women, some wearing face masks. They marched near the crime scene on Wednesday evening with placards and slogans calling for safety.

“Our body is our own,” some placards said, while others demanded freedom to go out at night without fear.

Campus a short walk from the alleged attack

The alleged assault took place barely 2 km (1.2 miles) from Lady Shri Ram (LSR) College, one of India’s leading colleges for women. The college called off classes on Tuesday after the suspect was shot metres from campus.

“Some students were panicking after the shooting so we decided to suspend classes around noon,” a college official, who did not want to be named, told Reuters.

LSR Principal Kanika K Ahuja said classes were cancelled after college authorities came to know about the incident, adding that the “safety, security, and well-being” of students was “paramount” to the institution, local media reported.

The father of the two brothers being questioned was quoted in local media as saying they had been framed. Reuters could not immediately establish how the arrested suspect had responded to the charges.

National record on sexual violence little changed since 2012

Sexual violence remains a major problem across India. More than 80 rapes are reported to police every day, according to National Crime Records Bureau data.

Activists say many more attacks go unreported because victims are often blamed and shamed.

The 2012 gang-rape of a student in Delhi sparked mass protests and led to tougher penalties and fast-track courts. Those reforms have, however, done little to improve statistics on sexual violence in the country, where analysts point to deep-seated patriarchy, understaffed police forces and judicial delays that leave many perpetrators believing they can escape punishment.
