INDIA TO HAVE THE WORLD’S LARGEST MUSLIM POPULATION BY 2050

India is expected to surpass Indonesia and have the world’s largest Muslim population by 2050, according to long-term demographic projections. Estimates show India’s Muslim population could reach about 311 million, or 18.4% of the total population.

Despite this significant increase in the number of Muslims, Hindus are expected to remain the overwhelming majority. The Hindu share of India’s population is projected to decline only modestly to around 76–77%, ensuring that India continues to have the world’s largest Hindu population as well.

The projections are based on demographic trends such as fertility rates, age structure, life expectancy, and population momentum, rather than religious conversions or government policies. Researchers emphasize that these are long-term statistical forecasts intended to help understand future population patterns.

India’s overall population is expected to remain among the largest in the world through the middle of the century, making it home to the largest populations of both Hindus and Muslims. The findings also underscore the country’s enduring religious diversity, with sizable communities of Christians, Sikhs, Buddhists, Jains, and others continuing to contribute to its multicultural character.

Experts caution that demographic projections are not predictions of political or social change. Instead, they provide a snapshot of how population composition may evolve if current demographic trends continue.

The report highlights that India’s future will continue to be shaped by its pluralistic social fabric, with demographic change occurring gradually over several decades while the country’s Hindu-majority character remains intact.
