Six confirmed dead and 109 rescued after the Virgo Transport 8 sank in the Java Sea; authorities continue searching for missing passengers and crew

At least 128 people remain missing after a passenger ferry sank in Indonesia’s Java Sea, with six people confirmed dead and 109 rescued, local media reported Tuesday.

Indonesia’s National Search and Rescue Agency (Basarnas) said 115 of the 243 people believed to have been aboard the Virgo Transport 8 had been located, according to state-run Antara news agency.

The ferry went down in the early hours of Sunday in waters off Tanjung Selatan, South Kalimantan, near Masalembu Island. Search and rescue teams from Basarnas and other Indonesian agencies are continuing operations to find those still unaccounted for.

Survivors Being Treated and Repatriated

South Kalimantan authorities said survivors will be assisted in returning to their hometowns once they are considered medically and psychologically fit to travel.

“After we asked them, most of the survivors said they wanted to return home quickly,” South Kalimantan Governor Muhidin said, according to Antara.

Officials are also assisting survivors who lost their identity documents in the disaster. Police certificates are being arranged so they can obtain the documentation required to purchase airline tickets.

Fifteen survivors remain hospitalized in Banjarmasin. Six are receiving treatment at Ulin Regional General Hospital, seven at Bhayangkara Hospital and two at Sultan Suriansyah Hospital.

A further 59 passengers who are in good health have been temporarily accommodated by the provincial government.

Why Did the Ferry Sink?

Authorities have not yet established a definitive cause for the sinking, and the ongoing investigation and recovery operation will be needed to determine what happened.

Ferry accidents in Indonesia can result from a combination of factors, including rough seas, sudden weather changes, overloading, mechanical failures, navigation problems and inadequate safety procedures. Determining whether any of these contributed to the Virgo Transport 8 disaster will require an official investigation.

Indonesia is particularly vulnerable to maritime accidents because of its geography. The country consists of more than 17,000 islands, making ferries and other vessels essential for transporting people and goods between communities.

The waters around Indonesia can also experience rapidly changing weather, strong currents and high waves. Passenger vessels operating between islands therefore face significant environmental and operational challenges.

Long History of Ferry Disasters

Indonesia has experienced a number of major ferry disasters over the decades, highlighting persistent concerns over maritime safety.

One of the country’s worst maritime tragedies occurred in 1994, when the passenger ferry KMP Tampomas II caught fire and sank in the Java Sea. Hundreds of people died.

Another major disaster occurred in 2006, when the ferry Senopati Nusantara sank during severe weather in the Java Sea, killing or leaving missing hundreds of passengers.

In 2018, the overloaded KM Sinar Bangun sank in Lake Toba, North Sumatra. The vessel was carrying far more people than its permitted capacity, and more than 160 people were believed to have died.

These disasters have repeatedly raised questions about vessel inspections, passenger manifests, overcrowding, weather monitoring, emergency equipment and enforcement of maritime regulations.

Search Effort Continues

The latest disaster has again focused attention on the safety of Indonesia’s extensive ferry network.

For now, rescue teams remain focused on locating the 128 people still missing. Authorities are expected to investigate the vessel’s condition, passenger capacity, weather and sea conditions, crew procedures and other possible factors to establish why the ferry sank.

The final death toll could change as the search continues and authorities reconcile passenger and crew records.
