Wed 10 November 2021:

Bird flu has been discovered at a poultry farm in the northeastern Japanese prefecture of Akita, prompting local officials to slaughter 143,000 birds, according to the prefectural government.

After a positive result in a preliminary test the day before, the outbreak of avian flu, the first in Japan this season, was confirmed by genetic testing at a poultry farm in Yokote.

Shipments of chickens or eggs from farms within a 10-kilometer radius of the impacted farm were likewise prohibited by the prefectural administration. At the request of the prefecture, the Ground Self-Defense Force despatched personnel to assist with the situation.

Prime Minister Fumio Kishida has also called for the gathering of information and has directed the farm ministry and other government agencies to work closely to take thorough preventive steps promptly, it added.

A veterinarian alerted to local health authorities on Tuesday morning, according to the prefectural government, that the number of chickens dying at the farm in Yokote had been growing.

Twelve of the thirteen birds tested positive for avian flu in a preliminary test.
