JULIAN ASSANGE FILES LAWSUIT AGAINST RAAB FOR PREVENTING MARRIAGE WITH FIANCEE

Sun 07 November 2021:

According to British media, Wikileaks founder Julian Assange and his fiancee Stella Moris have launched a lawsuit against UK Justice Secretary Dominic Raab and the head of Belmarsh prison, where the whistleblower is now detained, for blocking their marriage.

According to the Daily Mail, the pair alleges that the obstacles erected by UK authorities in this subject are part of a political campaign against Assange.

“There is no reason for political interference in what is a basic human right. The CIA revelations show the lengths some agencies are willing to go to in their persecution of Julian,” Moris was quoted as saying by the daily mail.

For the past five years, Assange and Moris have been engaged and have two children together. They requested for help in arranging the marriage in May, while the whistleblower was already in jail awaiting an extradition appeal trial, according to the publication.

The process, however, stopped, and Assange asked for official approval directly with the Belmarsh chief on October 7, with no success. The couple’s lawyers are also said to have received no reaction from the jail officials.

According to the Daily Mail, the lawsuit accuses Raab and Belmarsh Governor Jenny Louis of misusing their power over Assange, acting unreasonably and unfairly, and denying the couple and their children their human rights.

The defendants have until November 12 to react.

On April 11, 2019, Assange was arrested in London and sentenced to 50 weeks in prison for breaching bail in 2012. He sought sanctuary in the Ecuadorean embassy in London to avoid extradition to Sweden, where he faced sexual assault charges that were eventually rejected by a Swedish court.
