Tue 22 February 2022:

The three men convicted of murder in the fatal shooting of Ahmaud Arbery were found guilty of federal hate crimes on Tuesday for breaching on Arbery’s civil rights and targeting him because he was Black.

After several hours of deliberation, the jury decided on the charges against Greg and Travis McMichael, as well as neighbor William “Roddie” Bryan.

During the trial, prosecutors presented approximately two dozen text messages and social media posts in which Travis McMichael and Bryan used racist slurs and made derogatory remarks about African-Americans. Because Greg McMichael’s phone was encrypted, the FBI was unable to access it.

After seeing Arbery running through their neighborhood outside of the Georgia port city of Brunswick in February 2020, the McMichaels grabbed guns and jumped in a pickup truck to pursue him. Bryan joined the chase in his own pickup and captured footage of Travis McMichael fatally shooting Arbery on his cellphone. After the graphic video of the murder went viral two months later, it became part of a larger national reckoning on racial injustice.
