Left-wing president offers to disclose his family’s financial and telephone data if right-wing rival matches the move, as Vorcaro scandal dominates final campaign stretch

Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva on Tuesday dared Senator Flavio Bolsonaro to make his personal financial and communication records public ahead of Sunday’s presidential runoff, framing transparency as a way to expose corruption.

Speaking at a campaign stop in Maranhao state, Lula pledged to release his own bank, tax and telephone records — along with those of his relatives — provided Bolsonaro does the same. “I’m willing to let Brazilians see who the thieves and corrupt people in this country really are. I want to see whether he [Bolsonaro] has the courage to disclose his bank and phone records,” he said.

Vorcaro scandal casts long shadow

The exchange comes as both camps contend with fallout from a wide-ranging corruption probe centered on disgraced banker Daniel Vorcaro. The case has drawn in prominent figures and institutions nationwide. Bolsonaro is the sole major presidential contender with documented ties to Vorcaro, though the affair has also reached the Supreme Federal Court — a frequent target of right-wing criticism after it sentenced former President Jair Bolsonaro, Flavio’s father, to 27 years in prison for his part in a coup attempt following his 2022 defeat by Lula.

Right-wing forces have sought to leverage public unease over graft; Lula has worked to reverse that narrative in the race’s closing days.

Meta and U.S. involvement enter the fray

Separately, concerns about foreign interference have persisted after a series of interventions by the Trump administration in Brazilian affairs. Reports that Meta had limited Lula’s digital campaign triggered a formal complaint. On Tuesday the company informed Brazil’s Supreme Court it had taken measures to guarantee equal treatment for both candidates and that any automated limits on advertising accounts would be reviewed within two hours through the second round.

AFP, citing an unnamed source, reported that Lula intends to ask courts to bar Bolsonaro’s candidacy on grounds of “algorithmic manipulation” favoring the senator by the platform.
