Wed 02 September 2026:
Poland imposed nationwide limits on mobile phones in primary schools and preschools on Tuesday, as pupils began the new school year.
Primary school students may no longer use phones or similar electronic devices during lessons, breaks, or other school activities, Polish broadcaster TVP World reported.
Preschool children are not allowed to bring such devices to school.
The legislation provides exceptions when devices are needed for educational purposes, urgent communication with parents, immediate threats to health or life, and reasons related to health conditions, disabilities or special needs.
Upper-secondary schools are not automatically covered by the nationwide restrictions but may impose their own rules on electronic device use.
The measure forms part of the Polish government’s broader efforts to improve children’s digital well-being and limit their exposure to harmful online content.
Poland also considered restrictions earlier this year on social media access for children under the age of 15.
The legislation follows local initiatives, including a phone-free policy previously introduced in the southeastern city of Zamosc.
President Karol Nawrocki signed the legislation on July 30.

Negative Impact of Cellphone Use in Schools
Excessive cellphone use at school can negatively affect children’s learning, concentration and social development.
First, phones can become a major distraction. Notifications, social media, games and messages can interrupt lessons and make it harder for students to focus and remember information.
Second, frequent phone use can contribute to reduced academic performance, particularly when children use devices during lessons instead of participating in classroom activities.
Third, smartphones can affect face-to-face communication. Children may spend less time interacting directly with classmates, potentially weakening important social and communication skills.
There are also risks involving cyberbullying, inappropriate content and online pressure. Constant access to social media can expose children to harmful material and create anxiety about popularity, appearance or social status.
Finally, excessive screen use can contribute to poor sleep, especially when children continue using their phones at night.
Phones can be useful educational tools when properly managed, but schools and parents need clear boundaries to ensure technology supports learning rather than disrupts it.
