Indigenous leaders and lawmakers accuse One Nation leader of racism as debate over Australia’s treatment of First Nations people resurfaces

Australian lawmakers and Indigenous representatives have condemned One Nation leader Pauline Hanson after resurfaced comments in which she described Indigenous Australians as the “most primitive race on Earth.”

Hanson made the remarks during a podcast appearance last year while discussing how Indigenous history and culture should be taught in Australian schools, ABC News Australia reported Monday.

Indigenous Australians Minister Malarndirri McCarthy described the comments as “totally outrageous” and “completely racist,” arguing that such rhetoric fuels division and calling on Hanson to apologize.

Indigenous author, union official and human rights advocate Thomas Mayo called the remarks “shockingly racist” and “ignorantly wrong,” while saying they were consistent with Hanson’s political record.

Liberal Senator Kerrynne Liddle described the comments as “disgraceful,” while Senator Jacinta Nampijinpa Price accused Hanson of “wilful ignorance.”

A History of Discrimination Against Indigenous Australians

The controversy has revived wider debate about the treatment of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples, whose societies have existed on the Australian continent for tens of thousands of years.

Indigenous Australians comprise hundreds of distinct nations and language groups, with rich cultural, spiritual and social traditions that developed long before European colonisation.

British settlement from 1788 brought widespread dispossession, frontier violence, introduced diseases and the loss of access to traditional lands. Indigenous people were also subjected to discriminatory laws and policies that restricted movement, employment, political rights and control over their own lives.

For much of Australia’s modern history, government policies sought to assimilate Indigenous people into non-Indigenous society. One of the most damaging legacies was the removal of Indigenous children from their families, creating what became known as the Stolen Generations.

Indigenous Australians were also excluded from many aspects of civic and political life. Although Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people were formally included in the Australian census and granted federal voting rights through reforms in the 1960s, discrimination and socioeconomic disadvantage have continued.

Today, Indigenous Australians continue to experience disparities in areas including health, education, housing, employment and incarceration, while debates over land rights, recognition, cultural preservation and constitutional reform remain central to national discussions.

One Nation’s Immigration and Multiculturalism Policies

Hanson’s comments emerged as One Nation, the right-wing populist minor party she founded and continues to lead, promoted proposals for substantially reducing migration.

The party has long campaigned for tighter immigration controls and opposed aspects of Australia’s multicultural policies. Its latest proposals include reducing visas available to international students and graduates, along with restrictions affecting family members of students and migrant workers.

Critics have linked the latest controversy to Hanson’s broader political history, noting that she has remained one of Australia’s most prominent and divisive political figures since entering federal Parliament in the 1990s.

The backlash over her remarks has also renewed calls for political leaders to address Australia’s Indigenous history accurately and challenge stereotypes that portray First Nations peoples through racist or degrading descriptions.
