Tue 13 July 2021:
Renowned Tunisian tennis player Ons Jabeur is auctioning her racket to raise funds for her country’s battle against coronavirus.
In a video posted on her social media account, Jabeur said in addition to the revenue of the sale, she will also make a personal donation to support patients infected with COVID-19.
Last Monday Jabeur made history when she became the first Arab woman to reach the Wimbledon quarter-finals after defeating Iga Swiatek 5-7, 6-1, 6-1.
On Thursday, a spokeswoman for the Tunisian Ministry of Health said the country’s medical system is on the verge of collapse, with intensive care wards full of patients, doctors exhausted, and the coronavirus spreading at a rapid pace.
Tunisia has recorded nearly 10,000 new infections with the coronavirus, and 134 deaths, in a record daily increase since the outbreak of the virus.
The total number of people infected with COVID-19 has increased to about 465,000, while deaths exceeded 15,700.
