A Pakistani artist will be showcasing the world’s largest Quran at the Dubai Expo 2020 which is set to take place next month after having been postponed last year due to the coronavirus pandemic.
It is said to be the first of its kind, as the scripture will be cast on a canvas with aluminium and gold-plated script while most traditional copies of the Quran have been inscribed on either paper, cloth or leather.
The award-winning artist, Shahid Rassam is a former UAE expat and once won the artist of the year award from the University of Al-Ain in 2000, reported the Khaleej Times. He has previously inscribed the “99 Names of Allah” with similar aluminium and gold-plated text.
Rassam first started the “noble” project five years ago and has agreed to display part of the piece at the six-month long world expo event.
“Excluding frame, the size of the Holy Quran is 8.5-foot tall and 6.5-foot wide. It will have 150 words on one page…total number of pages are 550,” said an artist associated with the project being developed in Karachi.
“A Dubai-based overseas Pakistani businessman, Irfan Mustafa, is facilitating the artist to showcase this masterpiece at the Expo 2020 Dubai,” the artist added.
According to the Guinness World Records, the largest printed Quran measures 6.74 feet in height and 4.11 feet wide, and 6.69 inches thick. Weighing at 800 kilogrammes and consisting of 632 pages it is currently displayed at the National Museum of the Republic of Tatarstan in Russia after having been kept at the Qolsharif mosque in the republic’s city of Kazan.
