Wed 26 October 2022:

The Pentagon has stated once more that “there would be consequences” if Russia used nuclear weapons or a bomb contaminated with nuclear material.

“There would be consequences for Russia, whether it uses a nuclear weapon or a dirty bomb,” Pentagon press secretary Pat Ryder said in a press briefing.

Ryder said that he wouldn’t go into details about what the consequences would be, but they have “been communicated at a variety of levels” to Russia.

The Pentagon spokesperson also said that Russian allegations that Ukraine is preparing a “dirty bomb” are false.

Ryder said that the US was “constantly monitoring” the situation.

“I’m not going to go into specific details of how, when and where. But needless to say, it’s something that we take very seriously and continue to monitor 24/7.”

Earlier Ned Price, spokesperson of U.S. State Department also said, that, there would be consequences for Russia whether it uses a so-called “dirty bomb” or any other nuclear weapon.

“It would certainly be another example of President Putin’s brutality, if he were to use a so called ‘dirty bomb.’ There would be consequences for Russia whether it uses a ‘dirty bomb’ or a nuclear bomb. We’ve been very clear about that,” Price told reporters.

He added that it was important that Moscow know the “profound nature of the consequences” that would befall the country should it engage in nuclear use.

Price said the United States has not seen any indication that Russia is preparing to use a nuclear weapon, but concern over the possible use of a “dirty bomb” was sparked by Russian officials’ warnings that Ukraine was preparing to use such a bomb.

“We know the Kremlin’s track record when it comes to these types of claims. That’s of course what is the predicate, what ultimately undergirds our concerns,” Price said.
