POPE FRANCIS MET FRENCH PRESIDENT MACRON TO DISCUSS UKRAINE

The Holy See announced that Pope Francis and French President Emmanuel Macron had a private audience on Monday at the Vatican.

“During the cordial discussions, which took place in the Secretariat of State, the parties focused on matters of an international nature, starting from the conflict in Ukraine, with special attention to the humanitarian situation,” the Vatican said.

“Particular consideration was given to the region of the Caucasus, the Middle East, and Africa,” it added.

The two leaders then discussed “the conflict in Ukraine, with special attention to the humanitarian situation”, the Vatican said in a statement. “Particular consideration was given to the region of the Caucasus, the Middle East, and Africa,” it said. The Vatican said their private talks lasted 55 minutes.

Pietro Parolin, the Vatican’s secretary of state and the person in charge of the Holy See’s diplomatic activities, and Archbishop Paul Richard Gallagher, the person in charge of the Holy See’s international relations, were also met by Macron.

To take part in a peace event hosted by the Community of Sant’Egidio, a lay Catholic organization, Macron arrived in Rome on Sunday.

He also spoke with Giorgia Meloni, Italy’s newly elected prime minister.
