PUTIN CALLS FOR PRODUCTION OF PREVIOUSLY BANNED MISSILES AS TENSIONS WITH US ESCALATE

Sat 29 June 2024:

President Vladimir Putin announced that Russia should resume producing midrange missiles, previously banned under the now-defunct INF Treaty, amid rising tensions with the United States.

This follows Moscow’s accusation that Washington supplied Ukraine with ATACMS missiles used in a recent attack on Crimea, killing four. Russia has vowed a strong response to what it perceives as increased US involvement in the conflict. Putin emphasized the need to react to the US deploying midrange missiles to Denmark for training.

n a televised address to his top security officials, Putin said Russia needed to start manufacturing missiles that were previously banned under a now-defunct Cold War treaty.

He said the US had recently sent midrange missiles — able to strike targets at a distance of 500 to 5,500 kilometres (300-3,400 miles) — to Denmark for training exercises.

“We need to react to this and make decisions about what we should do next in this area. It seems that we need to start producing these strike systems,” Putin said.

“And then, based on the reality of the actual situation, make decisions about where to deploy them for our security,” he said.

Additionally, Russia warned that US drone reconnaissance flights over the Black Sea could lead to a “direct confrontation” between NATO and Russia. The situation further escalated as a Ukrainian drone hit a petrol depot in central Russia, highlighting ongoing hostilities.
