Wed 23 February 2022:

Trump has praised Russian President Vladimir Putin’s recognition of Ukraine’s rebel-held territory as independent as a “genius” move.

In an appearance on The Clay Travis & Buck Sexton Show, the former US president gushed incoherently over Putin’s warlike demeanor.

“I went in yesterday and there was a television screen, and I said, ‘This is genius.’ Putin declares a big portion of Ukraine, Putin declares it as independent. Oh, that’s wonderful,” said Trump.

He equated Putin to a peacekeeper and remarked that the US should take a cue from Russia’s actions in Ukraine and follow a similar approach on its southern border with Mexico — where the Trump administration had famously tried to put up a miles-long wall to keep out immigrants.

“So Putin is now saying, ‘It’s independent,’ a large section of Ukraine. I said, ‘How smart is that?’ And he’s going to go in and be a peacekeeper. That’s the strongest peace force. We could use that on our southern border,” he said.

The United States’ condemnation of Russia’s actions notwithstanding, Trump went on to describe Putin as a “savvy” guy whom he knows “very well”. He also claimed that “this never would have happened” with his administration.

Despite the United States’ condemnation of Russia’s activities, Trump went on to call Putin a “savvy” guy whom he knows “very well.” He further asserted that “this would never have happened” under his leadership.

This was Trump’s first public statement on the increasing tensions between Russia and Ukraine, which are shaking Europe and raising worries throughout the world that an all-out war is on the horizon.
