Mohammed bin Salman holds talks with Adm. Brad Cooper as Yemen conflict and regional attacks raise security concerns

Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman met US Central Command chief Adm. Brad Cooper and his accompanying delegation in Jeddah on Monday, Saudi state news agency SPA reported.

The meeting focused on bilateral relations between Saudi Arabia and the United States, along with the latest developments across the Middle East.

Saudi Minister of State, Cabinet member and National Security Adviser Musaed bin Mohammed Al-Aiban also attended the meeting.

Talks Come Amid Rising Middle East Tensions

The discussions took place as fighting between government forces and Houthi fighters intensifies in Yemen, while the Iran-backed group has continued to pose a security challenge to Saudi Arabia.

The latest tensions are part of a wider regional conflict involving Iran, its allied groups and US-backed partners. Yemen’s strategic position along the Red Sea and Bab al-Mandeb Strait has also made the conflict increasingly important to regional security and international trade.

Saudi energy infrastructure has come under renewed concern amid the escalation. Last week, the East-West pipeline was temporarily shut down as a precaution after drone strikes launched from Iraq hit areas around Riyadh and Medina.

The pipeline is strategically important because it allows Saudi crude to bypass the Strait of Hormuz and reach the Red Sea, reducing the kingdom’s dependence on the vital maritime chokepoint.

Saudi Arabia Seeks US Military Support

According to Axios, Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman has sought military assistance from US President Donald Trump to counter the Houthis, who have reportedly made advances during recent fighting.

The talks with Cooper come as Washington and Riyadh coordinate over threats to Saudi territory, energy infrastructure and key shipping routes amid the broader Middle East conflict.

The United States has maintained a significant military presence in the region, with Central Command overseeing US military operations across the Middle East.

Yemen War Enters Another Phase

Yemen has been engulfed in conflict since the Houthis seized the capital, Sanaa, and large parts of the country in September 2014.

Saudi Arabia subsequently led an Arab coalition that intervened in March 2015 to support Yemen’s internationally recognized government. The conflict has since developed into a prolonged regional confrontation involving Saudi Arabia, Iran, the Houthis and other local and international actors.

The Houthis’ ability to operate near the Red Sea and threaten regional infrastructure has added another layer to an already volatile Middle East security environment.

The meeting between Mohammed bin Salman and Cooper therefore comes at a critical moment for Saudi-US security cooperation, as Riyadh faces threats linked to the Yemen conflict while the wider regional war continues to reshape military and strategic calculations.
