‘Labour of Love: Embroidering Palestinian History’ exhibition

Supermodel Bella Hadid has landed in Qatar, according to a post on her official Instagram handle on Tuesday. She visited the ‘Labour of Love: Embroidering Palestinian History’ exhibition at Katara – the Cultural Village.

‘Landed in Doha and went straight to see the incredible new Palestine exhibition, ‘Labour of Love,’ she posted on Instagram.“ Embroidering Palestinian History will take visitors on a journey of discovery of ‘tatreez’ embroidery as woven into the social, economic, and political fabric of Palestinian society, through different historical periods.”

The American supermodel with Palestinian roots was seen with her father, Mohamed Hadid, at Katara. She is a vocal supporter of the Palestinian cause and frequently makes statements on the issue.

She added, ‘This show brought tears to my eyes and even more pride for my beautiful Palestinian roots and people. I love you Qatar and I love you Palestine!’

According to information available on the Qatar Museums (QM) website, the exhibition curated by Baha Jubeh of the Palestinian Museum is part of the Qatar-Menasa 2022 Year of Culture initiative.

‘Labour of Love’ investigates the symbolism of the practice, shining a light on the Palestinian ‘thobe’ – a traditionally embroidered dress. Through works from the collections of Qatar Museums and the Palestinian Museum, it seeks to explore the legacy of ‘tatreez’ through the lenses of gender, labour, commodity and class.

The exhibition also traces the shift of ‘tatreez’ from a personal practice, made with love, to a national symbol and onto a product circulating in the global marketplace.

The exhibition is taking place at Katara, QM Gallery, until January 28, 2023. The timings are from 9am-7pm, Saturday-Thursday, and from 1.30-7pm on Fridays.
