Tue 26 October 2021:

Thousands of New York City municipal employees, including firefighters and police officials, blocked traffic on the Brooklyn Bridge, as part of a demonstration against the Covid vaccination mandate in New York City.

The legislation, which affects about 50,000 workers, follows similar restrictions for health-care and education employees, and it goes into force on Friday afternoon. Anyone who fails to follow the directive will be placed on unpaid leave beginning November 1st. Workers who choose to be vaccinated will receive a bonus of $500 from the city.

Democratic Mayor Bill de Blasio announced last week that all public employees, including police officers and firefighters, will have to get vaccinated by November 1 or they will be placed on unpaid leave until they can provide proof of a shot.

They will not have the option of providing a negative test instead, but medical and religious exemptions will be allowed.

Firefighters hoisted American flags while chanting “My body, my choice” and pro-Donald Trump slogans on t-shirts showing their station’s number and the names of colleagues killed in the September 11, 2001 attacks.

“Vaccinated by the Holy Spirit,” one sign read, while a guy dressed as Jesus carried a cross in the middle of the procession.

The Police Benevolent Association, New York’s largest police union, filed a lawsuit opposing the mandate on Monday as well.

According to FDNY statistics, only 60% of the nearly 17,000 fire department employees had received a shot, compared to 84 percent of all New York adults.
