THREE IRANIAN DIPLOMATS TAKE UP POSITIONS IN OIC IN SAUDI JEDDAH

Mon 17 January 2022:

According to Iranian state media, three Iranian diplomats landed in Saudi Arabia for the first time in six years on Monday to represent Tehran’s representation in the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) in Jeddah.

“Three Iranian diplomats have arrived in Jeddah to start their work at the OIC,” Foreign Ministry spokesman Saeed Khatibzadeh told a press conference.

Tehran is preparing to resume its embassy in Riyadh, according to the spokesman. However, he emphasized that such a decision “depends on what practical measures the Saudi side will take.”

Following an attack on the Saudi Embassy in Tehran in January 2016, after Shia preacher Nimr al-Nimr was executed by Saudi authorities, Iran and Saudi Arabia suspended diplomatic ties.

Relations between the two adversaries worsened further after Iran accused Saudi officials in September 2016 of purposefully killing over 400 Iranian pilgrims in a 2015 stampede in Mecca.

Since then, the two sides have been embroiled in a bitter regional rivalry, accusing one other of waging a proxy war for regional clout.

In recent months, however, the two countries have undertaken many rounds of negotiations mediated by Iraq in an attempt to improve their relations and address their disputes.
