Wed 18 January 2023:

Former US President Donald Trump is planning a social media comeback on Facebook and Twitter after being banned from both platforms.

This unfolds as Trump gets ready to run for president of the United States.

According to several sources, the Trump campaign team had already petitioned Facebook’s parent company, Meta, to unblock the account.

“We believe that the ban on President Trump’s account on Facebook has dramatically distorted and inhibited the public discourse,” Trump’s campaign wrote in its letter to Meta on Tuesday, according to a copy reviewed by NBC News.

MUSK REINSTATES DONALD TRUMP’S TWITTER ACCOUNT

A Meta spokesperson declined to comment about Trump beyond saying the company “will announce a decision in the coming weeks in line with the process we laid out.”

Facebook and Twitter banned Trump a day after a mob of his supporters stormed the Capitol and interfered with Congress as it was counting the electoral votes to certify Joe Biden’s victory for president in 2020. Many of these supporters have admitted in federal court that they were roused by Trump’s claims of a stolen election.

However, Trump’s Twitter account got reactivated on November 19, 2022, after the platform’s takeover by billionaire Elon Musk, who had criticised the ban.

Trump’s plans to expand his social media footprint also highlight the reach of Truth Social. On the platform, Trump has slightly more than 4.8 million followers, compared to nearly 88 million on Twitter and 34 million on Facebook.
