Mon 20 January 2025:
US President-elect Donald Trump promised Sunday that he would declassify documents related to the assassinations of former President John F. Kennedy and civil rights activist Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.
“As the first step toward restoring transparency and accountability to government, we will also reverse the over-classification of government documents,” Trump told his supporters at the Capital One Arena in Washington, D.C.
“And in the coming days, we are going to make public remaining records relating to the assassinations of President John F. Kenedy, his brother Robert Kennedy, as well as Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.,” he added.
Trump had previously also called for fully declassifying information related to JFK’s assassination, which happened in 1963.
In Sunday’s speech, he reiterated this commitment, stating that he would fulfill this promise once he took office.
Both Robert Kennedy and Martin Luther King Jr. were assassinated in 1968.
Trump will be formally sworn-in to office Monday just before noon and will shortly thereafter sign off on an onslaught of ready-to-go executive orders.

The assassination of John F. Kennedy in 1963 has fueled decades of conspiracy theories. While the official explanation is that Lee Harvey Oswald acted alone, many believe there was a broader plot involving multiple actors. Theories include:
- CIA Involvement: Some claim the CIA orchestrated the assassination due to JFK’s stance on issues like Cuba and his desire to reform the intelligence agency.
- Mob Connections: The mafia is suspected by some, as Kennedy’s administration cracked down on organized crime, despite alleged ties to mob figures.
- Cold War Politics: The Soviet Union or Cuba are often implicated, given JFK’s conflicts with these nations during the Cold War.
- Military-Industrial Complex: Another theory suggests JFK’s intent to reduce U.S. military involvement in Vietnam angered powerful defense interests.
- Second Shooter: The idea of a second gunman in Dealey Plaza, supported by conflicting witness accounts and forensic anomalies, challenges the lone gunman narrative.
None of these theories have been conclusively proven, leaving the JFK assassination one of history’s enduring mysteries.
Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s assassination in 1968 has sparked numerous conspiracy theories, despite the official narrative that James Earl Ray acted alone. Key points of these theories include:
- Government Involvement: Many believe that the FBI or other government agencies orchestrated the assassination. J. Edgar Hoover’s FBI had a history of surveilling and harassing King, considering him a threat to national security.
- Ray as a Patsy: Some argue James Earl Ray, the convicted assassin, was framed or manipulated. Ray himself claimed he was set up by a mysterious figure named “Raoul,” whom he said guided his actions.
- Military and Local Police: Allegations exist that elements of the military or Memphis police colluded to ensure King’s death, citing reduced security and questionable actions at the scene.
- Economic and Racist Motivations: King’s growing focus on economic justice and criticism of U.S. militarism may have threatened powerful interests, leading to a broader conspiracy.
A 1999 civil trial brought by the King family concluded there was likely a conspiracy involving government agencies and other actors, though this finding was not legally binding. The true extent of the plot remains a subject of debate.
