British Conservative lawmaker David Amess has died after being stabbed multiple times at a constituency meeting east of London.

69 years old Lawmaker David Amess, died on Friday after the stabbing attack at his constituency surgery in the Belfairs Methodist Church in the town of Leigh-on-Sea in Essex, the Essex Police said.

Police arrested a 25-year-old suspect after they were called to reports of the stabbing just after 1100 UTC Friday, Essex police said in a statement. “A man was arrested and a knife recovered,” said Essex Police.

“We are not looking for anyone else in connection with the incident and do not believe there is an ongoing threat to the wider public,” police said.

Emergency workers had tried to stabilize Amess before moving him from the church, Southend Conservative Party chairman John Lamb said.

An air ambulance was waiting outside Belfairs Methodist church where the incident occurred to transport him to a hospital, reports said. But two hours after the stabbing occoured, he had not been taken to hospital, Lamb said, adding the situation was “extremely serious.”

The incident was met with shock from lawmakers across Britain’s political spectrum. It comes five years after Jo Cox, a Labour MP, was murdered in her constituency by a far-right extremist, days before the UK’s referendum on whether to leave the European Union.

Amess,  has been an active lawmaker in UK parliament, sponsoring bills including the Abortion (Amendment) Bill (1996-7), the Protection Against Cruel Tethering Act (1988) and the Warm Homes Bill, which passed into law in December 2000 as the Warm Homes and Energy Conservation Act, according to his website.

He was one of the longest-serving members of parliament, first elected to represent Basildon in 1983. He then stood for election in Southend West in 1997 and was knighted in 2015’s New Year’s Honours List for his political and public service.

The stabbing comes five years after Labour Party MP Jo Cox was killed in her northern England constituency.

British lawmakers generally do not have police protection in their constituencies. Amess had indiciated the times and locations of open meetings with constituents on his website.
