Fri 05 January 2024:

There has been no investigation since Prince Andrew was listed as one of Jeffrey Epstein’s accomplices in court papers revealed by a US court, the Met Police have said.

Several of Epstein’s associates are named in the newly revealed court filings, though many of them are not accused of any crime.

Andrew, 63, a younger brother of King Charles, has always denied accusations of sexual wrongdoing and in February 2022 settled a U.S. lawsuit brought by Virginia Giuffre accusing him of sexually abusing her when she was a teenager.

Details of Giuffre’s allegations and those made by another Epstein accuser against the British royal have been previously reported, but featured in previously redacted court documents detailing the extent of Epstein’s alleged sex trafficking activities which were unsealed on Wednesday.

In one document, a woman named Johanna Sjoberg claimed, while giving testimony in May 2016, that the Duke of York had touched her breast while sitting on a couch inside the US billionaire’s Manhattan apartment in 2001.

Buckingham Palace has previously said the allegations are “categorically untrue”.

After the documents were unsealed, Republic, a pressure group calling for the abolition of the monarchy, reported Prince Andrew to the police.

The group’s chief executive, Graham Smith, urged the Met to open an investigation – and called on the King to make a public statement on the matter.

Smith said: “To date, there appears to have been no serious criminal investigation, no interview of the accused or other witnesses, and no clear justification for taking no action.”

A statement by the Met said: “We are aware of the release of court documents in relation to Jeffrey Epstein.

“As with any matter, should new and relevant information be brought to our attention we will assess it.

“No investigation has been launched.”

The financier Epstein was charged with sexually abusing minor females as young as 14. He was being held in federal custody in Manhattan while awaiting trial for sex trafficking when he was discovered dead in his cell in 2019.

Ghislaine Maxwell was found guilty of aiding in the recruitment and grooming of teenagers for Epstein’s molesting, and she is presently serving a 20-year prison sentence.
