Investigation reportedly targets officials linked to disclosures about shortages of long-range missiles and Patriot interceptors

US investigators administered polygraph tests to 50 military officers and civilian officials in August as part of a probe into leaks about depleted American weapons stocks, multiple media outlets reported on Friday.

The investigation focused on personnel serving with the Joint Staff, the senior military leadership group that advises the president. According to The New York Times, investigators were examining disclosures concerning shortages of long-range missiles and Patriot air-defence interceptors following the war with Iran.

A CBS News report said the FBI did not conduct the tests. Instead, the military relied on its own internal investigators. Not every senior leader was examined, and the chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, Gen. Dan Caine, was reportedly excluded.

Trump reportedly angered by disclosures

US President Donald Trump is said to be furious over the unauthorized leaks.

CBS News reported that none of the officials failed the polygraph questions intended to determine whether they had shared information with the media. Investigators were also reportedly examining the possibility that a government official could be working as a foreign spy, given the highly restricted access to the munitions data.

Pentagon spokesman Sean Parnell said the department “does not comment on internal personnel or investigative matters” but treats classified leaks “extremely seriously and investigates accordingly.”

Trump has denied reports of strategic weapons shortages, claiming the military has “massive amounts” of weaponry. He described the disclosures as “treasonous statements” and “fake news,” and warned that those responsible would be “hunted down” and could face lengthy prison sentences.

Probe follows additional military leaks

The polygraph operation came after other unauthorized disclosures, including a leaked section of the Secretary of Defense Orders Book.

The document indicated that six four-star military leaders had formally opposed extending large-scale operations against Iran. They warned that the conflict was “unsustainable” and was weakening global military readiness.

Parnell described the disclosure as a “crime” and “a betrayal of the force,” while arguing that much of the subsequent reporting was inaccurate.
