US NATIONAL ARCHIVES REQUESTS LEGAL PROBE OF TRUMP OVER HANDLING OF DOCUMENTS

Thu 10 February 2022:

The US National Archives, which oversees the preservation of presidential documents, reportedly requested a probe into President Donald Trump’s handling of government documents in a letter to the Justice Department on Wednesday, according to The Washington Post.

The National Archives reported on Monday that it had retrieved 15 boxes of documents from Trump’s Florida resort that he had taken with him when he left Washington. Trump has been in the news in recent weeks for unlawfully handling federal records.

Official contact with North Korean leader Kim Jong Un is among the documents, as is a note left in the Oval Office by Trump’s predecessor, former President Barack Obama.

According to the Post, the Justice Department had just undertaken preliminary talks regarding the case, citing two anonymous officials familiar with the situation. It’s still unclear whether the agency will respond to the request and take action.

Under the 1978 Presidential Records Act (PRA), which was passed in the aftermath of the Watergate affair, all US presidents are required to turn up all of their emails, letters, and other work records to the National Archives.

Last Monday, the government agency revealed that Trump had a habit of ripping up paperwork, which is illegal under the PRA, and that a number of documents had to be re-taped.

There has been a feud between Trump and the National Archives, which he unsuccessfully sued in an attempt to block the transfer of White House documents to a congressional committee researching the January 6, 2021 riot on the US Capitol.
