Tue 24 May 2022:

The US is “playing with fire,” according to the Chinese State Council’s Taiwan Affairs Office, following President Joe Biden’s pledge to defend the self-ruled island if Beijing moves to seize control, state media Xinhua reported.

According to Zhu Fenglian, a spokeswoman for the council, which is sometimes referred to as China’s cabinet, the US is “using the ‘Taiwan card’ to contain China and will get burned.”

Biden’s prior words on Taiwan were his most strong to date, and they come amid escalating tensions over China’s expanding economic and military strength.

State outlet Xinhua said Zhu “urged the United States to stop any remarks or actions” that violate previously established principles between the two countries.

Asked Monday if Washington was willing to get involved militarily to defend Taiwan, Biden replied: “Yes.”

“That’s the commitment we made,” he said.

The president of the United States addressed in Tokyo, where he is meeting with Japan’s prime minister ahead of a regional conference on Tuesday.

A forceful response to Russia’s invasion of Ukraine has been presented by Washington and allies like Japan as a warning to others, including China, against unilateral military action.

The Taiwan Affairs Office is part of China’s State Council, which is frequently referred to as the country’s cabinet.
