VOLKSWAGEN RECALLS OVER 208,000 VEHICLES IN US OVER STEERING DEFECT

German automaker Volkswagen is recalling 208,724 vehicles in the US due to a steering system defect, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA).

The recall covers certain 2018 Tiguan, 2018-2019 Atlas and 2019-2021 Audi Q3 vehicles. The affected models include vehicles sold under both the Volkswagen and Audi brands across multiple production years.

NHTSA said the steering rack mounting bolt in the affected vehicles may corrode and eventually break. If the bolt fails, the vehicle could lose steering control, which increases the risk of a crash.

The defect involves the right-side steering rack mounting bolt, which secures the steering system. Corrosion of the bolt could affect a driver’s ability to control the vehicle.

Dealers will replace the right-side steering rack mounting bolt at no charge as part of the recall remedy. The measure aims to address the defect before the component can corrode and break.

The vehicles covered by the recall include the Volkswagen Tiguan and Atlas, as well as the Audi Q3. The affected models differ in size and positioning within the Volkswagen Group’s vehicle range, but the recall concerns the same type of steering rack bolt defect.

NHTSA warned that a breakage could increase the risk of a crash through potential loss of steering control. Volkswagen will replace the specified mounting bolt at no cost to vehicle owners through dealers.
