Fri 06 August 2021:

The White House has finally responded on why Tesla was left out of their EV event.

Tesla CEO Elon Musk expressed surprise this week that his company was not invited to the event, while executives from Ford, GM, and Stellantis stood alongside President Biden as he detailed an executive order calling for half of all U.S. car sales to be zero-emission vehicles by 2030.

During her daily press briefing, Psaki was asked to explain why Tesla wasn’t invited to the event, despite its leading role in the electric vehicle industry.

Secretary Psaki started her briefing with President Biden’s investments to address the climate crisis. Shen then spoke of positioning America to drive the electric vehicle future forward with goals to out-compete China. She added that he would sign an executive order that sets a new target to make half of all new vehicles sold in 2030 zero-emissions vehicles. These include battery electric vehicles, plug-in hybrids, and fuel cell vehicles.

During the Q&A, one of the reporters asked,

“And the founder of Tesla, Elon Musk, expressed surprise that he was not invited to the ceremony because his company is obviously such a large manufacturer of electric vehicles. Can you give us any insight into why Tesla wasn’t included in this event?”

A follow-up question was,

When asked if Tesla was omitted from the event because it was not unionized, Psaki again noted that attendees included “the three largest employers of the United Auto Workers.”

And Psaki replied,

“Well, these are the three largest employers of the United Auto Workers, so I’ll let you draw your own conclusion.”

Secretary Psaki replied,

“We, of course, welcome the efforts of all automakers who recognize the potential of an electric vehicle future and support efforts that will help reach the president’s goal, and certainly, Tesla is one of those companies. Today, it’s the three largest employers of the United Auto Workers and the UAW president who will stand with President Biden as he announces his ambitious new target, but I would not expect this is the last time we talk about clean cars, the move toward electric vehicles, and we look forward to having a range of partners in that effort.”

Over the last few years, Musk has spoken out against efforts to unionize Tesla employees at its car plant in Fremont, California. In March, the National Labor Relations Board ordered Musk to delete a 2018 tweet and to reinstate an employee who was fired for labor organization efforts.

Since taking office in January, Biden has developed close ties with key labor groups. His administration has claimed that focusing on green energy infrastructure will result in the creation of millions of well-paid union jobs.

Executives from Ford, GM, and Stellantis have vowed to make electric vehicles account for 40 percent to 50 percent of their U.S. sales by 2030. Tesla’s whole lineup is made up of electric automobiles, and the company has the biggest market share in this segment.
