Mon 21 June 2021:

Senior journalist Rana Ayyub is one of the individuals booked by the UP Police for sharing a video clip with claim that an elderly man was beaten and his beard was cut off on religious lines in Loni area in the state’s Ghaziabad district.

Today, the Bombay High Court granted her protection from arrest for four weeks.

Her lawyer told the court that Ayyub deleted her tweet on coming to know about the veracity of the video that was circulated on Twitter.

Apart from Ayyub, the UP Police had named Twitter, The Wire, journalist Saba Naqvi, Congress politicians Shama Mohamed, Salman Nizami and Maskoor Usmani, and Alt news co-founder Mohammed Zubair in the FIR registered in relation to a tweet showing a Ghaziabad Muslim man’s beard being chopped off by some attackers.

The UP Police claimed there was no religious angle in the attack on Abdul Samad in Ghaziabad. They added that a few Muslim boys were also involved in the attack.

However, Samad has said that he was forced to chant the slogan ‘Jai Shri Ram’ and his beard was cut off. Samad’s version indicates that he was assaulted on religious lines.
