A blast at a mosque during Friday prayer rocked the city of Kabul, killing at least 12 people. The explosion took place in the mosque located on the outskirts of the Afghan capital amid an Eid ceasefire declared by the Taliban and the Afghan government.
The explosion occurred during Friday prayer at midday in Haji Bakhshi Mosque in Qala-e-Murad Baig area of Shakar Dara district, on the northern outskirts of Kabul city.
“The death count has jumped to 12 killed including the imam of the mosque and 20 others are wounded,” Ferdaws Framurz, the spokesman for Kabul police said, updating an earlier toll.
“During Friday congregation, an explosion happened inside a mosque in Shakar Darah district of Kabul (province).”
The wounded were shifted to a nearby hospital by police and volunteers from local residents.
The blast occurred as the militants of Taliban outfit and government security forces are observing a three-day ceasefire during Eid al-Fitr festival starting from Thursday.
“The number of casualties may change,” Faramarz said, adding the praying leader received wounds in the incident.
No group has claimed responsibility for the attack so far.
