Sun 24 May 2026:

Saudi Arabia has launched one of its most extensive Hajj security operations in recent years, deploying advanced air defence systems, specialised military units, and emergency response teams across the kingdom’s holy sites, as regional tensions linked to the Iran conflict continue to raise security concerns.

Footage released by the Saudi Ministry of Defense showed, the Kingdom’s Air Defense Forces on high alert, ahead of the annual Hajj pilgrimage, with officials stressing their readiness to intercept any aerial threats, targeting the airspace over Mecca, Medina and surrounding holy sites.

According to the Saudi Ministry of Defense, preparations for the Hajj season have been completed through a comprehensive operational plan involving military, civilian and medical personnel. The operation is designed to support security agencies and government authorities, responsible for protecting pilgrims, and ensuring the smooth conduct of rituals, during one of the world’s largest religious gatherings.

This year’s Hajj, scheduled to run from May 25 to May 29, is expected to draw around 1.5 million pilgrims, from across the world. The pilgrimage comes at a time of heightened regional instability, with ongoing hostilities, involving Iran and previous missile and drone attacks, targeting Saudi territory, increasing concerns over potential security risks.

Saudi authorities have significantly strengthened aerial surveillance, and defence capabilities, around the holy sites, reflecting fears that regional conflict could spill over during the pilgrimage season. It marks the first time Saudi Arabia is proceeding with the Hajj, while facing an active regional war environment, involving direct threats to its territory.

As part of the wider security operation, Saudi Arabia’s Land Forces — including Special Military Police and Chemical, Biological, Radiological and Nuclear Defence units — have been deployed to assist with crowd management, secure access points around the Grand Mosque, and respond to any emergency scenarios.

In recent years, Saudi Arabia has increasingly expanded the use of surveillance technology, drones, specialised response units and digital coordination systems during Hajj operations as part of broader efforts, to improve safety, crisis response and crowd management.

The Hajj remains one of the largest annual human gatherings in the world, and is considered a religious obligation for Muslims, who are physically and financially able to perform it, at least once in their lifetime.
