Tue 24 August 2021:

Following a virtual G7 meeting on Afghanistan on Tuesday, UK Prime Minister Boris Johnson stated the G7 leaders agreed on a roadmap for engagement with the Taliban movement.

“What we’ve done today at the G7, is we’ve got together the leading Western powers and agreed, not just a joint approach to dealing with the evacuation, but also a roadmap for the way in which we’re going to engage with the Taliban, as it will probably be a Taliban government in Kabul,” Johnson said in a press statement.

Safe passage From Kabul After Aug 31

The Taliban must “guarantee” a safe passage for those fleeing Afghanistan beyond the current August 31 evacuation deadline, the G7 agreed Tuesday, according to British Prime Minister Boris Johnson.

Johnson, who convened the emergency meeting, said that he and his colleagues had agreed “a roadmap for the way in which we’re going to engage with the Taliban” in the future. He added that the “number one condition” was “to guarantee… through August 31 and beyond, a safe passage for those who want to come out.”

Legitimacy Of Future Afghan Government

The legitimacy of the future Afghan government is dependent on its approach toward upholding the international obligations on ensuring stability in Afghanistan, G7 leaders said in a joint statement issued on Tuesday.

G7 and Secretaries General of the United Nations and NATO met virtually on Tuesday to discuss the latest developments in Afghanistan.

“The legitimacy of any future government depends on the approach it now takes to uphold its international obligations and commitments to ensure a stable Afghanistan,” the statement read.

During the meeting, the participants also noted that the resolution of the crisis in Afghanistan can only be reached with the international community involved, as well as the UN and G20, in particular, in humanitarian assistance to the country.

Additionally, the leaders emphasized the importance of the protection of the civilians in Afghanistan, and underlined that the Taliban will be held responsible for protection of human rights, as well as preventing terrorism.
