Mon 06 September 2021:

According to local media, Mamady Doumbouya, the leader of a group of rebels who staged a coup in Guinea on Sunday, met with government ministers after the rebels declared the dismissal of the cabinet.

Conakry, Guinea’s capital, hosted the gathering. Doumbouya promised to build a national unity administration and stated that none of the country’s past leaders would be allowed to depart without the approval of the new authority.

Guinea would not violate its economic responsibilities, including those related to mineral resource extraction, according to the rebel leader.

Doumbouya led a group of Guinean soldiers who invaded the presidential residence on Sunday and detained President Alpha Conde. Doumbouya abolished the country’s parliament and declared the country’s constitution null and unconstitutional, instituting a statewide curfew.

Since 2010, Conde, 83, has ruled the country. In March 2020, a referendum approved constitutional modifications that would allow Conde to serve two more terms in office. The opposition boycotted the referendum, and more than 40 people were killed in anti-constitutional rallying. In July, a bill was passed that increased Conde’s income, causing public uproar in the midst of Guinea’s widespread poverty.
