◼️Missing SA tourists: Gift of the Givers ready for Nepal rescue mission: Founder and chairperson of Gift of the Givers, Dr Imtiaz Sooliman said: “We spoke to the tour operator that hosted the couple; he confirmed that a second South African couple and several international tourists are missing and that thousands of homes, shopping malls and businesses have been washed away.” Sooliman said Ahmed Bham, Gift of the Givers’ head of search and rescue, is in communication with the Nepalese Disaster Management, as the organisation has a relationship with them after responding to the Nepal earthquake in 2015.

◼️ Malema says white people must return the land they have stolen from black people: “We are not disrespected because we are black. We are disrespected because we don’t own property. The ownership of property starts with the land.” Malema argued that jobs are also linked to land, especially regarding mining rights associated with the land in mineral-rich areas. “When you say, ‘We want these mines,’ on whose land are they situated? You must first take the land, because the land comes with everything,” he said.

◼️ South Africa needs an emergency food plan — now: South Africa produces enough food to feed all its people, yet millions go hungry. This is not a failure of agricultural production. It is a failure of affordability, distribution, inequality and political will. The evidence is not abstract. It is measured in empty stomachs, children going to bed without food, parents skipping meals so their children can eat, and, increasingly, in disability and deaths, particularly in very young children.

◼️ China advises its citizens to leave Taiwan ally Eswatini: The ministry cited “rampant cyber fraud and criminal activities associated with gambling” as among its security concerns, but did not give details. It suggested its citizens relocate as soon as possible to “relatively safer” countries such as neighbouring South Africa. Eswatini is one of 12 countries, and the only one in Africa, that has diplomatic relations with Taiwan, which China claims as part of its territory.

◼️ Johannesburg spends R21 billion on salaries while trash piles up in the streets: Johannesburg has 34,453 employees, with an average remuneration of more than R600,000 per employee. This is about 20% higher than the average for national and provincial government employees. “If the city employs more people and spends more on contractors, why are roads collapsing, substations failing, billing systems mistrusted, water services deteriorating, and public spaces decaying?” the report questioned.
